Family Counseling

Ongoing family tensions can prevent us from having the loving relationships we desire with our immediate and/or extended family. Issues such as substance abuse, infidelity, financial troubles, domestic violence, or even another family member’s mental illness can all be reasons to seek family therapy.

Pre-marital, marital, and family counseling can help clients work through issues in a neutral space.

The goal of family counseling is to help family members improve communication and resolve conflicts so that they can relieve those tensions. Family therapy may include all family members, or just those who are willing to participate. The duration of therapy, as well as the plan for treatment, is based on the situation of each family.

Couples may also find the need for counseling at various stages of their relationship, even at the very beginning. Often, there are revealing components of a relationship not always evident during the dating phase. Pre-marital counseling and assessment are designed to address these concerns as the relationship takes on a deeper, more permanent level.

Your therapist may use several tools to assist you and your loved ones as you seek to build a stronger relationship:

  • Family mapping to help identify any family dynamics contributing to your relationship.

  • Assessment to determine where problems/issues are likely to occur.

  • Exercises and worksheets to facilitate the counseling process.

Family therapy can be useful in any family situation that causes stress, grief, anger or conflict. It can help you and your family members understand one another better and learn coping skills to bring you closer together.
